iOS 5: How To Activate Airplay Mirroring on iPad2 with Apple TV

A key new feature of iOS 5 with iPad 2 is to mirror exactly what’s on your iPad’s screen to your TV via Apple TV using Airplay.

This can already be achieved on iOS 4, without an Apple TV, using Apple’s HDMI AV Mirroring Adapter but iOS 5 now provides a wireless method albeit using Apple TV to do the job.

Airplay Mirroring has been simply but effectively integrated right into the multitasking bar and it’s performance is surprisingly good.

Here’s how to do it:

1.  Ensure your Apple TV is switched on and at the home screen.

2.  On your iPad 2, access the multitasking bar by either swiping up the screen with three fingers or by double-tapping the home button.

3.  Swipe the multi-tasking bar to the right to reveal the iPod/Brightness/Volume/Airplay controls panel.

4.  Tap the Airplay button.

5.  Tap Apple TV

6.  Toggle the Mirroring switch to ON.

This was tested on an iPad 2 running iOS 5 developer edition.  These features may change when iOS 5 is released.
